The yellowfin grouper has a variable color scheme from shallow water greenish olive and a deeper water bright red. The head and body have a darker black oval shaped blotches in longitude rows. The last one third of the pectoral fins are bright yellow and lower parts of larger fish have small bright red spots.
Yellowfin grouper are found offshore on reefs or rocky natural bottom. Yellowfin grouper undergo a sex reversal from female to male in the later part of life. They feed mainly on other fish and squid.
