The Fishing in Schools Program promotes education through fishing by creating responsible youth anglers who take an active role in conserving our aquatic environments. Students engage in fun outdoor activities available to all genders and ages while gaining knowledge of Louisiana’s fisheries ecology and management.
Additionally, Fishing in the Schools promotes awareness of the Sport Fish Restoration Program, which uses angler support to help ensure the future of recreational fishing in Louisiana for generations to come.
The program strives to train educators through hands-on educational workshops with LDWF biologists and provided lesson plans to:
- Introduce students to outdoor fishing activities or enhance current skills
- Expose students to key topics of fisheries science
- Create future environmental stewards who understand and conserve Louisiana’s fisheries resources
- Demonstrate student’s crucial role in the Sport Fish Restoration cycle
- Introduce students to conservation and biology careers by involving them as student scientists in LDWF research
Loaner kits with classroom equipment are available to educators participating in the program.
