The Gulf killifish is a very common member of the killifish family. They are the largest growing member and is a widely used baitfish for other inshore gamefish. They feature a blunt head and very short snout. Vertical bars with a dark back and lighter underside. Fins may be yellowish with opalacent-colored spots. Males get more color during breeding season.

As its name states, the Gulf killifish is common throughout the Gulf of Mexico and midway up the East Coast of the U.S.

They are found in a wide variety of estuarine habitats including marshes, bays and beaches.
