Invasive & Prohibited Species Overview
Almost all habitats have been exposed to the threats of introduced exotic species. Whether escaped or released, exotic animals can compete with native species for food and habitat. With no natural set of checks and balances, exotic species populations often explode and the negative effects begin to show. It is very hard to remove or control feral species once they begin to reproduce. Capture and reporting are the two most important things an angler can do when they encounter an introduced species.
Some animal invasions include the Asian carp, apple snails, Rio Grande cichlids, tiger prawns and tilapia. Invaders also come in the form of aquatic plants like hydrilla, salvinia, water hyacinth, cuban bulrush, crested floating heart and more. The LDWF works hard to limit the damage done by these species, but they need your help too. Please report sightings and captures of exotics to the LDWF at (225) 765-3977.
