Anyone who eats seafood or has a business in Louisiana, especially related to tourism, has a direct benefit to seafood produced in the fertile waters of Louisiana. Seafood is a direct producer of higher revenue for the economy and people of Louisiana.

It all starts with the mighty Mississippi River that brings nutrients down and spreads it throughout the estuaries and marshes of Louisiana. This creates the productive breeding grounds for plentiful seafood, and the quality that comes from these waters is second to none.

Be it brown and white shrimp, blue crabs and oysters or redfish, trout and freshwater catfish, Louisiana has some of the best tasting fresh seafood in the country.

There is a lot of history that goes into the seafood industry here, and many families have multiple generations working the waters of the state to bring seafood to the public. Many things are passed down from generation to generation, and it is really a way of life for those involved.

The goals of many initiatives implemented for the industry are all about quality. First is sustainability of the resource so that this harvest will be able to continue for many more generations in the future.

Another important program is the Certified Seafood program, which certifies the origin of the product to be caught, processed and handled in Louisiana. Consumers know that when a product is Certified Seafood, it has benefited the people of Louisiana from the water to the table. You will taste the freshness and know that you are eating Louisiana Certified Seafood.

Local restaurants are proud to be able to show that they are cooking Louisiana seafood, because they know it is the best product to serve to their guests. You can almost taste the care in our seafood, and there is a true sense of pride in Louisiana’s product.

There are also programs in place that teach younger generations about the industry. Not only do they learn how to fish but also how to run the associated businesses that go with it. The goal is to bring more generations back into the seafood industries. The LDWF runs this program for the benefit of the industry and to make sure that everyone involved, from the fishermen to the consumer, has an opportunity to benefit and enjoy Louisiana’s bountiful harvest.
